A Florist's Guide to Wedding Flowers

May 29, 20263 min read

Flowers have the power to completely transform a wedding day, but knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. From choosing your style and colour palette to understanding what to prioritise within your budget, there are plenty of decisions to make along the way.

For this article, I'm joined by one of my favourite florists and a trusted friend, Liesa from Fleur de Lys. With years of experience creating beautiful floral designs for couples across South Australia, she's sharing her expert advice on the wedding flower questions couples ask most, along with a few insider tips that could save you time, stress, and money.

1. What’s the biggest mistake couples make when it comes to wedding flowers?

Following trends that will date quickly and going with items they feel they’re ‘supposed’ to have, whether it suits their style as a couple or the venue they’ve chosen or not.

2. Where can couples save vs. where should they invest when it comes to florals?

If you have a smaller budget, omit items such as buttonholes and chose petite bouquets or single stems for bridesmaids. Invest in feature florals that can be repurposed from the ceremony to the reception and have focal pieces that stand out rather than small arrangements scattered throughout the space, especially when you chose a venue with lots of character and gorgeous fixtures and fittings.

3. When should couples book their florist, and what should they have prepared before reaching out?

If you’re wanting a specific florist/s, reach out as soon as your engagement is announced to reduce the disappointment of them already being booked. Having a venue booked and images or a pinterest board with a colour palate and style that you love or are leaning towards prepared, is required when having your florist quote you. Be flexible, flowers are temperamental, have a plan B in place in the case it’s necessary. Your florist can assist you with this.

4. What’s one trend you’re loving right now - and one you think couples should think twice about?

While I’ve been quite a fan of fabric backdrops recently, I’m not generally a fan of trends. A timeless look injected with elements of your personalities and favourite things as a couple will be something you’ll look back fondly on. This may not be the case should you decide to follow the crowd.

5. If you could give every couple one piece of advice before their wedding day, what would it be?

Don’t go for vendors just because they’re the lowest cost. Choose vendors who you’re comfortable with and can feel safe knowing your vision will be executed beautifully, and the process during the lead up will be seamless.
