The Questions Every Couple Should Ask Their Wedding Venue
Booking your venue is one of the most exciting milestones in the wedding planning process. It's often the first major decision you'll make, and it can influence everything from your guest experience and styling to your timeline and budget.
But once the excitement settles, many couples realise there are questions they didn't think to ask.
As a wedding planner, I've seen firsthand how a few simple conversations with your venue can prevent stress, unexpected costs, and last-minute surprises. Here are some of the most important questions to ask before your big day.

What exactly is included?
Every venue package is different. While one venue may include tables, chairs, glassware and staffing, another may provide little more than the space itself. Ask for a detailed list of inclusions so you can budget accurately and avoid unexpected hire costs later on.
What are the access times?
This is one of the most overlooked questions. When can your suppliers arrive? How early can styling begin? What time does everything need to be packed down and removed?
Access times can significantly impact your setup plans, particularly if you're working with a stylist, florist, band or multiple suppliers. If you don't consider these early, you may be charged if you need additional set up time or if your stylist is working within a short time frame.
What is your wet weather plan?
Even if rain feels unlikely, every couple should understand their venue's backup plan. Where will the ceremony be relocated? How much notice is required to make the decision? How many guests can the alternative space comfortably accommodate?
The best wet weather plans feel intentional rather than like a last-minute compromise.
Are there any restrictions we should know about?
Every venue has rules, and it's better to know them early.
Ask about:
Supplier restrictions
Candles and open flames
Confetti or petals
Noise limits
Curfews
Styling installations
Outdoor amplified music
Knowing these details upfront can save disappointment later.
How will the venue support our vendors?
Your venue and suppliers work as a team on the day. Ask whether vendors have access to power, loading zones, preparation spaces and parking. These small logistical details can make a big difference to how smoothly your wedding runs. You should also consider whether you will need to provide meals for your vendors on the day.
What does the guest experience look like?
Try to view your venue through the eyes of your guests.
Is there adequate parking? Are the ceremony and reception spaces easy to navigate? Is there shelter from the weather? Are there enough bathrooms?
The most memorable weddings aren't always the most extravagant, they're the ones where guests feel comfortable and looked after.
Final Thoughts
Your venue is far more than a beautiful backdrop. It's the foundation for your entire wedding day.
The more you understand how your venue operates, the easier it becomes to make confident decisions, avoid unnecessary stress, and create a seamless experience for both you and your guests.
And remember, you don't need to ask every question on day one. The key is starting the conversation early and building a strong relationship with your venue team throughout the planning process.
